Car Tires
RUBBER SOLE - Mississauga Territory, Lot 1 / Concession 1, Millennium Trail, Alderville First Nation
“This place has always been a crossroads, a place on the way to somewhere else.”
Before the Loyalists arrived, the Mississauga moved freely though this region hunting and fishing according to the seasons. The Carrying Place at the east end of the Bay is an historical portage route used for centuries by Indigenous peoples. There were fishing camps at the Bay of Quinte and near Kingston where the Mississauga met to trade and connect with each other. In 1837 decedents of these Mississauga left the Bay of Quinte area for Alnwick Township near the shores of Rice Lake. The Alderville First Nation would emerge at this new location.
I found this pile of illegally dumped tires off the side of the Millennium walking trail along the perimeter of Lot 1 Concession 1 in Wellington.
I know Lawrence traveled from Kingston to Wellington after his shoemaking apprenticeship. I wonder if he knew 15 canoes carrying Mohawk families landed on the shores of the Bay of Quinte in 1784.
