Trish Rae told me that. She is the official historian for the Mohawk of Tyendinaga. I discovered her on Youtube and managed to get in touch. She has done research into the voyage of the 20 Mohawk families that came from the Mohawk Valley to the Bay of Quinte, and researched present day land claims for the community. She helped me understand the region before Loyalist settlement and how the land was used by various Indigenous Nations.

Back in Ireland, Captain John married a Quaker named Deborah. Quakers are pacifists, and I wonder if it was his connection to the Quakers that sparked his retired from the military. Whatever the cause, his retirement package included 2 Military Grants in Canada. Lawrence and his wife, Lydia Garrett were also Quakers. After they married they moved around a lot. Lawrence might have been tracking work or they might have been following different Friends (Quaker) Meeting Houses. They are listed in the West Lake Monthly Meeting register of the Friends as residing in Thurlow Township in 1837.

After the Crawford Purchase, many of the remaining Mississauga people were relocated to a Methodist Missionary school on Grape Island, just 2 km south of Thurlow (present day Bellville).
