It was both peaceful and adventurous to be able to explore the Gray’s Creek Conservation Area. The area was free and open to the public. There were dirt trails through the forest as well as paved trails through more park-like areas for joggers and people with wheels. There was evidence of forest conservation: trail maintenance, signage, and these green tarps wrapping the bases of a stand of pine trees. I explored the trails and also went “off road” where I was ravaged by mosquitoes and black flies.

In 1801 Walter Colquhoun sent his son Robert abroad to make his fortune as a textile merchant. Robert worked as a farmer, Indian Agent and merchant during his life in Canada. When I read Robert’s Will to my dad he said, “My, my. Robert died a very wealthy man.”
