One of the stupid “Settler Gaffes” I made in preparing to visit Cornwall was to research land “in isolation,” or as neat little rectangular lots of land. I had spent hours in the Ontario Archives trying to pinpoint the exact parcels of land Robert held on the Nutfiled Tract and overlaying old surveys onto google maps so I could walk exactly those boundaries. I had prepared a list of questions to ask people from the Akwesasne community about the land.

“We’re actually part of that river. They say there’s layers in there, and underneath that river there is medicine. So we have to acknowledge and respect it that way. We don’t try to disturb it too much.”

In 2008 the Ontario Power Generation Company settled a Land Claim with the Akwesasne Nation resulting from damages and land lost during the building of the St Lawrence Seaway. During the building of the dam the river was completely blocked and drained. The Glass Eels, historically a key source of food and leather for the Akwesasne people, have been rendered almost extinct.
