Black Tarp
LEFT FRONT QUARTER - Lake Ontario, Mohawk Valley, Tyendinaga Territory, Simcoe Deed
“After traveling by canoe from Lachine, Quebec our ancestors arrived on the shores of the Bay of Quinte on May 22, 1784.”
About 20 Mohawk families landed on the shores of the Bay of Quinte in 1784. They were displaced from their homeland in the Mohawk Valley when the British Crown lost the war and surrendered their land to the Americans. Sir William Johnson promised new land to these British allies and Chief/Captain John Deserontyon moved with his people to the Bay of Quinte. Their first act after beaching their canoes was to have a service of thanksgiving.
