I couldn’t get cell service. I didn’t have a map. I was looking for another boarder crossing, but strangely there wasn’t one. Akwesasne Territory spans three jurisdictions: Ontario, Quebec and New York State. This means an international boarder runs right through the community. Ever since 911 armed boarder guards patrol the bridge. Many people have to cross the Canada / US boarder everyday. I find boarders scary and can’t imagine being questioned everyday about my comings and goings.

After the day I sent exploring the American side of Akwesasne Territory I had to smuggle back two rabbit pelts, 3 feathers and some clam shells from the Akwesasne River. As a White person I knew I’d likely be OK. While I don’t identify as a middle-aged White Lady, I can pass. I knew I could plead innocence of the rules if caught. I was nervous though. Even though I wasn’t likely to be racially profiled, boarder guards can still ruin your day. I did some shopping at the Purple Ribbon gift shop to have something to show.

I know the Townships north of the St Lawrence River were settled according to race and religion.  I wonder if Robert left New York State to be with his Lowland Scottish kin.
