This website is not a history book.
I am not an historian.
I am an artist, you are digging through an art project.
These pages detail what I’ve learned and what I’ve wondered about walking on Indigenous land. You should treat this website like you have walked into my studio and encountered a chaotic jumble of research, reflections and questions.
That said, I have tried my best to ensure that all historical details on this site are accurate. Any misinformation or gaps in information are my responsibility. The sources for my information include books, archival materials, oral histories and interviews. (Sometimes I came across conflicting views or accounts of events; ultimately I had to choose what to include and what to omit.) When writing entries on this website I juxtaposed what I learned against my own reflections and questions.
Because this project is on-going some of my thoughts and interpretations have changed since these words were written. Not all the entries are finished. Please treat this website as an online parking lot for my thoughts, not the definitive story. The goal of this work is to spark conversation – face to face discussions where we can use these shoes to talk about what we know and what we wonder about walking on Indigenous land. The conversations I’ve had thus far have changed and expanded this story and my understanding of history. These shoes, like this site, are meant to take you on a journey, not bring you to a destination or a tidy, well-written conclusion.
